ForbesMilwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy spoke with San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello for 45 minutes in the outfield before a recent game in Milwaukee. Murphy, who has won the National League Manager of the Year Award twice in a row, offered advice on managing during a difficult stretch.
The San Francisco Giants entered the 2026 season after hiring Vitello from his prior position as head coach at the University of Tennessee.
The team has recorded the worst start in franchise history and sits more than a dozen games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West standings. Murphy said the key is to separate personal feelings from the job. “As soon as you realize all that suffering is your ego and it’s about you, then you’ll realize that that’s not healthy and it’s kind of selfish,” he said.
The conversation was reported by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser. Forbes reported that the exchange occurred amid scrutiny of Vitello’s early performance and dugout decisions. Murphy’s comments addressed the transition from college to professional baseball.
He noted that maintaining focus on players remains difficult regardless of experience.
