Giants Restructure Andrew Thomas Contract for Added Cap Space
The New York Giants restructured left tackle Andrew Thomas' contract to free up $6.46 million in salary-cap space. The move follows the signing of one first-round draft pick and precedes the signing of another.
New York PostThe change created $6.46 million in immediate salary-cap space. The team now holds $11.9 million in available cap room according to Wednesday's NFLPA records. That figure does not yet reflect the Thomas restructure or the recent signing of rookie offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa.
Thomas' deal runs through 2029.
A maximum restructure could have produced an additional $4.5 million in cap space, but the Giants stopped short of that option. Linebacker Arvell Reese, the No. 5 overall pick, has not signed his projected four-year, $47.8 million contract that carries an $8.6 million cap charge. Mauigoa, the No. 10 pick, signed his four-year, $30.9 million deal that counts $5.6 million against the cap.
The Giants are also working out veteran defensive tackles after the season-ending injury to Roy Robertson-Harrison. Fan-favorite receiver Odell Beckham Jr. remains a possible free-agent target, though it is unclear whether he would accept a minimum deal.
Simple restructures do not require player approval because they do not alter compensation and only affect team accounting by spreading payments over remaining contract years. One effect of such moves is an implicit signal that the team expects the player to remain under contract for the full term, since early release could create future dead-money charges.
