San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman left Tuesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks after suffering an abdominal strain in the sixth inning. ESPN reported that the five-time Gold Glove winner is scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury.
The 33-year-old Chapman charged in on a ground ball hit by Gabriel Moreno, fielded it cleanly with his bare hand and threw to first base to end the sixth.
He showed obvious pain and walked gingerly to the dugout after the play. Chapman batted in the seventh inning and recorded an infield pop out before exiting. Chapman said his abdominal area had bothered him over the past several weeks but the pain remained manageable until the incident.
"It's been hot and cold where I'm trying to figure out what's going on," he said. " The Giants fell 2-8 to the Diamondbacks in Phoenix. 235 this season with seven home runs and 42 RBIs. He has recorded four hits in his last 46 at-bats.
