Gilgo Beach defendant held in segregated cell for three years, sheriff says

The Manhattan architect convicted in the Gilgo Beach killings has remained in a segregated cell at the Suffolk County jail in Riverhead, New York, since his July 2023 arrest, according to the sheriff who oversees the facility. The inmate has read multiple crime and mystery novels from the jail library, including titles by J.D. Robb, John Sandford, Heather Graham, Sue Grafton, and Lisa Jackson.

Officials said the selections focus on violent crime rather than other subjects. A brief written exchange occurred with another convicted murderer serving life sentences in Oregon. The other inmate initiated contact, and the Gilgo Beach defendant responded once before declining further correspondence.

Daily conditions The defendant occupies a standard cell containing a metal sink, metal toilet, and thin mattress. All movement outside the cell occurs under close supervision, with other inmates cleared from hallways during any transit. Meals are delivered to the cell three times daily.

Showers and yard time occur alone, and the defendant has shown little physical activity during outdoor periods, according to officials.

Visits and upcoming sentencing Approved visitors have included his ex-wife, adult children, attorneys, and a therapist. Meetings take place in a designated area where physical contact is permitted at the start and end of each session. The defendant faces sentencing this week after pleading guilty to seven murders and admitting responsibility for an eighth death.

His ex-wife and children have stated through counsel they will not attend the proceeding. A lawyer representing some victims' families issued a statement describing both the defendant and his Oregon correspondent as "losers" and "cowards" who targeted vulnerable individuals.
