A judge in Riverhead, New York, sentenced Rex Heuermann to three life sentences for first-degree murder and 25 years to life on four second-degree murder charges, all running consecutively, on Wednesday. Heuermann admitted to strangling and binding the victims before scattering their remains along remote Long Island beaches. The murders occurred between 1993 and 2010.
The judge told Heuermann he was "a disgusting and despicable, small man, if you're a man at all. And you're a coward" before ordering him removed from the courtroom. Heuermann had given a brief statement acknowledging responsibility and answered "yes" when asked if he was sorry.
Victims' family members addressed the court with statements describing the impact of the losses. One relative recounted phone calls made after a killing and another described learning that body parts had been found.
Background and Investigation Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect, was arrested in 2023 after DNA from a pizza box linked him to the crimes. Police had investigated the deaths for over a decade before forming a task force that identified him within weeks.
He pleaded guilty in April to an additional killing from 1996 after initially pleading not guilty to seven murders. The victims were identified as Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, Sandra Costilla, and Karen Vergata.
After the hearing, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said families should focus on healing. Heuermann's defense attorney said the guilty pleas spared the family a trial.
