Global Electric Vehicle Sales Rise in Multiple Regions
Electric vehicle sales reached record shares in several markets during 2025. Data show growth in China, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and parts of Europe. The International Energy Agency reported the shift occurred despite slower adoption in the United States.
Sales of petrol and diesel vehicles fell 37 percent from the same month a year earlier. The International Energy Agency stated that global electric vehicle adoption accelerated in 2025.
Electric vehicles captured 63 percent of car sales in Singapore last year, up from 3 percent in 2020. Early data for April and May indicate the share may approach two-thirds. South Korea recorded a 65 percent increase in electric vehicle sales. In Europe, registrations rose 34 percent in April from a year earlier, with Denmark at 82 percent and Sweden at 41 percent.
The International Energy Agency report attributed last year’s growth mainly to lower purchase prices rather than policy measures. Seventy percent of battery electric vehicles sold in China in 2025 cost less than comparable petrol or diesel models at the time of purchase.
