Global electric vehicle sales are expected to reach 23 million units in 2026, an 11 percent increase from 2025, according to Semafor. The rise comes as the Iran war contributes to higher gasoline prices and falling lithium-ion battery prices make EVs more affordable.
China's domestic EV sales declined last month while its exports rose 73 percent. Semafor reported that the changes reflect altered calculations for EV economics tied to the Iran war. In the United States, fueling a gasoline car costs nearly three times as much as charging an EV.
A Carbon Brief analysis found UK drivers of EVs save nearly $1,500 per year compared with petrol vehicles. War-related fuel price increases have coincided with these affordability gains for electric vehicles.
