Two people died and 22 others were injured when a car drove into a pedestrian zone in central Leipzig, Germany, on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at about 17:35 local time, when a vehicle crossed Augustusplatz into Grimmaische Street and continued past a market, striking several people before halting near bollards.

Police arrested the driver, a 33-year-old German citizen, at the scene after bystanders apprehended him.

Authorities reported three serious injuries among the victims, including a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man who were killed. Leipzig police spokesperson Susanne Luebcke described the path of the car, noting it injured multiple people in the Grimmaische Straße area.

Michael Kretschmer, head of Saxony state, said the suspect had previously suffered from mental illness. Eyewitness Susi told Radio Leipzig she heard a loud bang as the car sped by, taking refuge in a nearby jewelry shop where she later saw injured people on the ground.

Another witness described passersby dragging the driver from an open window and securing him with cable ties until police arrived.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung called the event a horrific rampage, expressing shock over the deaths and injuries in the shopping area. Residents placed flowers and candles at the cordoned-off site on Tuesday, opposite St. Thomas Church.
