Medical researcher Eric Topol stated that whether GLP-1 drugs have a real impact on cancer remains unresolved. If confirmed, any observed effect could reflect weight loss alone or weight-loss-independent mechanisms, as seen with other conditions such as heart and kidney disease. Dedicated clinical trials are needed to resolve the question, Topol said.
GLP-1 receptor agonists are medications primarily prescribed for type 2 diabetes and weight management. Prior studies have examined their effects on cardiovascular and renal outcomes beyond weight reduction.
Topol called for targeted trials to determine whether any cancer-related findings represent direct drug effects or secondary results of weight loss.
