GM published an open letter Tuesday urging utilities and regulators to develop programs that let bidirectional EVs supply power to the grid during peak demand.

General Motors published an open letter to utility executives and energy lawmakers on Tuesday calling for a public-private collaboration on vehicle-to-grid programs. The letter asks stakeholders to address customer enrollment, incentives, and rate structures that would allow EV batteries to send electricity back to the grid.

U.S. roads and is committed to adding bidirectional charging capability across its entire EV portfolio. The company stated that 250,000 bidirectional EVs could supply power for about 120,000 homes for up to one week or for all of San Francisco for one day.

Kelty described the future customer experience as a "buy low, sell high" scenario for electricity. He said an EV would discharge power during peak demand times such as late afternoon or evening and recharge later at night when electricity is cheaper. Kelty added that utilities may need the extra support only 20 or 30 days out of the year and that the EV would not be fully discharged each time.

He said the process would not create much extra wear and tear on the battery and that the battery would remain covered under warranty if customers followed a GM-specific program. GM said it is now testing vehicle-to-grid programs with PG&E in northern California and DTE Energy in Michigan. Kelty said the company's main goal is to sell more EVs and reduce fossil fuel consumption.
