Shea Theodore was credited with the game-winning goal at 5:38 of the second overtime after his shot deflected off Carolina forward Jordan Martinook and past goaltender Brandon Bussi. The Golden Knights defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 on Saturday night in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Vegas built a 4-0 lead in the second period on a natural hat trick by Mitch Marner and a goal by Tomas Hertl. Carolina responded with three goals 39 seconds apart in the third period, then tied the score on a power-play goal by Andrei Svechnikov with 1:42 remaining.

Overtime and series context The teams played two overtime periods before Theodore's shot produced the decisive bounce. Carolina had been 6-0 in overtime this postseason and was attempting to become the first team to overcome a four-goal deficit in the third period of a Cup Final game.

Teams that take a 2-1 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final have won the championship 46 of 57 times. Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night in Las Vegas. "At that point, you are just trying to get anything to the net and hope you get a bounce," Theodore said.

" This was the tenth time the first three games of a Stanley Cup Final were decided by one goal. The previous occurrence was in 2016 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks.
