Golden Knights hire new coach with eight games left, reach Stanley Cup Final

The Vegas Golden Knights hired a new coach with eight games remaining in the regular season after losing six of their previous seven games. The move came after the prior coach had guided the team into a playoff position. The new coach focused on establishing stability and reducing direct involvement with players.

General manager Kelly McCrimmon said the change produced visible confidence and restored team swagger.

Playoff run The Golden Knights overcame a first-round deficit against the Utah Mammoth. They then defeated the Anaheim Ducks in seven games and swept the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference finals. They enter Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final tied 1-1 with the opposing team.

The coach, 67, said he learned to respect the athletes more and step back when appropriate. McCrimmon noted the coach's enthusiasm has been infectious among players.

“I think he has a lot of confidence. I think that was something you can see. There are times when a change has some benefits.”

“We're still involved, but I think you need — especially with this team when I came here, I think you need to respect the athletes.”
