The Golden State Valkyries reached the No. 1 position in ESPN's WNBA Power Rankings after securing five consecutive victories. Their most recent win came Monday against the Washington Mystics by a score of 62-49. The Valkyries held the Mystics to the fewest points scored by any WNBA team this season.
State scored 62 points and shot 35 percent from the field in the Monday game. No starters reached double figures in scoring, yet the team still secured the victory. A guard on the team said the defense relies on effort and focus. The coach noted adjustments at halftime that limited the Mystics to eight points in the paint during the second half.
The Valkyries also defeated the Atlanta Dream 88-83 on Saturday. A forward scored 19 points in that contest.
Those results are counted in the power ranking calculation. The Valkyries hold a 15-7 record and next play at Toronto on July 8.
