Goldman Sachs chief of staff to depart at end of June
The bank's chief of staff privately raised concerns about the CEO's decision to retain an adviser after her resignation. He is leaving the role at the end of June and stated his departure is unrelated to the internal disagreement.
japantimes.co.jpGoldman Sachs chief of staff Russell Horwitz will leave his position at the end of June. Horwitz had privately raised concerns for months about the CEO's decision to retain the firm's former top lawyer after her resignation. The concerns centered on the lawyer's past ties to Jeffrey Epstein, according to people familiar with the matter cited by the Financial Times.
Horwitz stated that the internal disagreement was not the reason for his departure. "No, that is not the reason I'm leaving Goldman Sachs," he said in a statement.
Internal disagreement The Financial Times reported that Horwitz was among the few senior figures inside the firm who challenged the CEO's continued support for the adviser. " The former general counsel resigned in February after the Justice Department released emails showing her communications with Epstein.
The CEO asked her to remain as an adviser beyond her scheduled departure later this month. Two Democratic lawmakers wrote to the CEO stating that retaining the adviser called into question his "professional judgement and fitness to continue leading one of the largest banks in the United States," Bloomberg News reported.
Goldman Sachs and representatives for the former general counsel declined to comment.
