Google Announces New AI Features for Android 17
Alphabet Inc.’s Google announced multiple upcoming features for its Android 17 operating system focused on artificial intelligence capabilities. The updates include enhancements to the Gemini AI assistant, a voice dictation tool and expanded automation functions. The announcement comes weeks before Apple is set to reveal upgrades to its iOS platform and AI offerings.
Los Angeles Times’s Google announced a range of upcoming features for its Android 17 operating system on Tuesday. The updates center on artificial intelligence and include advanced capabilities for the Gemini AI assistant, a new voice dictation tool and improvements aimed at video creators.
The company is also introducing a new “Googlebook” laptop platform. ’s next foldable phones and Google’s Pixel 11 series, both scheduled for release this summer. Google said the new features will roll out in waves. The announcement was made weeks before Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
The company is holding its own developer event next week. Google aims to demonstrate that its Android platform offers an AI experience that is further along than what Apple plans to introduce. The timing places the two companies in direct competition on AI features for mobile devices.
One new capability is Rambler, a voice dictation feature that ignores filler words and focuses on key content. Audio is used only for transcription and is not saved or stored. Rambler can also switch between languages within a single message. Android 17 will expand Gemini’s ability to browse the web and control apps.
Following earlier testing on Samsung and Pixel phones with select rideshare and food delivery apps, the functionality will now work in a wider range of situations. For example, Gemini can take a grocery list from a notes app and build a shopping cart for delivery.
Users can stop any automation or take over at any time. Another tool, Create A Widget, allows users to set up home screen widgets by describing what they want in natural language. “For years, we’ve been micromanaging our computers, breaking down our goals into endless clicks or taps,” Sameer Samat, who oversees the Android ecosystem, said in an interview.
“And I think the new interface with AI can change that. to address a longstanding issue with video quality. Videos recorded on high-end Android devices and uploaded to Instagram previously lost detail compared with iPhone clips. The company said external side-by-side tests now show Android videos scoring the same or better.
A new feature called Screen Reactions records video of both the user via the selfie camera and the screen content simultaneously. This format is popular on social media but has often required additional equipment and editing. The capability is now built directly into Android and will arrive first on Pixel devices.
Emoji are also being updated with more than 4,000 new icons that offer greater depth and realism. These will debut on the Pixel line. A tool called Pause Point is designed to reduce extended scrolling by suggesting short exercises or other activities when users open designated distracting apps.
Google is improving file sharing between Android and iPhone users. Users will be able to generate a QR code to share files, images and videos with iOS devices via the cloud even without the recent Quick Share workaround. In the coming weeks, third-party apps including WhatsApp will support cross-platform sharing over Quick Share.
The company said it is rebranding its consumer-facing Gemini features on premium smartphones as Gemini Intelligence. Sameer Samat stated there is concern about adding AI for its own sake and that the company wants its changes to be purposeful. He added that every aspect of the operating system needs to change as part of this shift in how users interact with technology.
“All these things help you spend less time and effort really using the machine to accomplish what you’re trying to do, which hopefully gives you more back for yourself,” Samat said.
