Google introduced a new series of laptops running a hybrid of Android and ChromeOS during the Android Show. The devices, manufactured by several companies, integrate closely with Android phones and feature Gemini AI capabilities. More details on pricing, availability and hardware are expected later in spring.
Google announced a new line of high-end laptops designed to run Gemini AI during this week's Android Show, ahead of Google I/O. The devices, referred to as Googlebooks, will operate on a hybrid of Android and ChromeOS and will be manufactured by Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS and Acer.
They will launch later this year and all models will feature a glowing rainbow bar on the lid. The company has not confirmed whether it will produce its own model. The laptops were positioned as the company's most advanced devices and integrate deeply with Android phones.
Users will be able to launch phone apps directly on the laptop as though they were installed locally and browse files stored on their phone using the laptop's interface.
One demonstrated feature, called Magic Pointer, allows users to shake the mouse cursor to activate Gemini and then hover over any screen element for suggestions or questions. Another feature enables users to describe a widget to Gemini, which then creates it on the home screen.
Demonstrations included outfit suggestions, flight tracking and restaurant bookings. The new operating system is expected to maintain the strengths of ChromeOS while incorporating Android foundations. The machines will likely use modern mobile chips with neural processors to enable local generation of text and images without cloud reliance.
This represents a shift from traditional Chromebooks that require a web connection for most functions.
In the past two years, the mainstream laptop market has moved toward more capable devices marketed as AI workstations. Microsoft has released Copilot+ PCs with dedicated AI keys while Apple has integrated AI features into its Mac lineup. Google aims to address the segment for AI laptops that integrate closely with Android phones and its Gemini system.
A new agentic form of Gemini called Gemini Intelligence was also revealed. It is designed to fill out forms, refine transcriptions and draw insights from calendars and messages to suggest replies. Personal Intelligence, which allows Gemini to draw context from data in various apps, has launched in Australia.
The feature is off by default and requires a paid Google subscription at the AI Plus tier or higher. Google has provided no details on the devices' likely price or specific rollout timing and locations beyond a later-in-spring window.
