9to5google.comGoogle is rolling out a new AI-powered contextual suggestions feature to Android users that recommends actions based on daily habits, location and routines. The contextual suggestions feature has started appearing on some Pixel 10 series devices running Android 16. It appears to be enabled by default.
Contextual suggestions were previously available in the Play Services beta before Google expanded the feature to the stable channel, The Verge reported. The system can allow music streaming apps to suggest a user's usual playlist when they arrive at the gym. If a user often casts sports games to their living room TV on Saturdays, the device can suggest casting at the right time.
The Verge reported that the feature is designed to predict the next action based on location and habits. Users can manage what data is accessed by the contextual suggestions feature, including disabling its use of device location. The privacy section of the contextual suggestions settings states that the feature works in an encrypted space on the device.
It adds that user data is not shared with Google, apps or third-party services. "In this space, AI learns from the data and makes predictions about what might be helpful to you," Google says in the feature description. The contextual suggestions feature requires Android 14 or higher to support audio and video casting, according to a Google support page.
While Google has not issued a formal announcement of the launch, reporters at Android Authority and 9to5Google observed the feature on Pixel 10 series devices. The Verge reported that screenshots of the settings interface show options for users to control data access. Google has not confirmed whether contextual suggestions will become available on non-Pixel Android phones.
The rollout marks the latest addition to on-device AI capabilities on Android. Contextual suggestions shares some similarities with the Magic Cue feature that launched with Google’s Pixel 10 series, which proactively suggests contextual information such as addresses and contact information. The Verge reached out to Google to clarify the launch timeline and regional or device support.
