Google Chrome downloads a 4GB file associated with its on-device AI capabilities that can reduce available storage on desktop computers. bin, appears in the browser's system folders for users who have enabled specific Gemini AI features. bin file forms part of Google's Gemini Nano model, which supports tools including scam detection, writing assistance, autofill and suggestion features.

Because the model runs locally on the device rather than in the cloud, it requires the training parameters to be stored locally. The company has stated that the exact size of Gemini Nano may vary as the browser updates the model. Users who have observed unexplained reductions in available storage can locate the file by examining the OptGuideOnDeviceModel directory within their Chrome data folders.

The file cannot be deleted permanently while the AI features remain active, as the browser may download it again.

Disabling the Feature To stop the file from being reinstalled, users must open Chrome settings, navigate to the System section and toggle off the On-Device AI option. This action disables the local AI features that rely on the Gemini Nano model. The storage requirement is noted in a guide for built-in AI features but is not displayed at the point when users enable the tools in the browser.

The Verge reported that clearer notification of the file size or an option to use cloud-based models could have reduced user confusion. The company has been contacted for comment on the automatic download behavior.
