Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis closed the Google I/O keynote presentation on Tuesday with remarks on artificial general intelligence. He said Google’s research and products will help unlock AGI’s potential for the benefit of the entire world. Hassabis described the current period as standing in the foothills of the singularity.

He said this technology will be a force multiplier for human ingenuity and usher in a new golden age of scientific discovery and progress.

Just before the closing remarks, Hassabis introduced Gemini for Science, a set of tools and experiments in Google Labs and Google Antigravity. The tools are intended to help with scientific research. Hassabis said Google hopes to reimagine drug discovery with the goal of one day solving all disease.

In an interview with Bloomberg several months earlier, Hassabis defined the singularity as another word for full AGI arriving. He said at that time that the industry was nowhere near that point. When asked about his timeline for achieving AGI, Hassabis said he was standing by his prediction of a 50 percent chance of reaching it by 2030.
