Google Reallocates Resources in Cloud Division, Cutting Some Roles Including in Threat Intelligence
Google laid off employees across its Cloud division over the past two weeks, including staff in its Threat Intelligence Group. The company cited reinvestment in AI as one reason for the reductions.
Google laid off employees across its Cloud division over the past two weeks. Two people familiar with the matter told Business Insider that the cuts reached multiple teams inside Google Cloud and also affected staff at Mandiant, the cybersecurity company Google acquired in 2022.
One of the units hit was the Threat Intelligence Group, which Business Insider described as one of Google's top security units and which regularly publishes research about hackers.
The group received its notices yesterday, the same sources said. It remains unclear how many employees were affected or why the reductions occurred at this time. In at least one case, Google told an employee the move was intended to free resources for growth areas such as AI, one of the people familiar with the matter said.
Some laid-off workers have posted about the reductions on LinkedIn. Business Insider reported that Google Cloud conducted a smaller round of cuts last year, focused mainly on user-experience roles. The action follows similar moves at other technology companies.
Meta laid off 10 percent of its staff last month. Coinbase and Block cited AI investments when they reduced headcount earlier this year.
