Google to Roll Out Limited AI Voice Scam Detection on Pixel Phones in June 2026, Works Only Within Its Own App
Google will begin a global rollout of fake call detection on Android devices before the end of June 2026. The feature will be enabled by default and will first reach Pixel users running Android 12.
citizen.co.zaGoogle will begin rolling out fake call detection on Android devices before the end of June 2026. The feature alerts users when a caller is using AI voice-cloning tools in a scam attack. The system will be enabled by default.
It works only when both the user and the impersonated contact are using Phone by Google. A June 2 confirmation from Google stated that the feature will help protect users against common AI voice scams such as a family member supposedly calling for help.
The caller ID might say “mom” and the caller might sound exactly like her, right down to intonation, but “it’s a scammer using AI tools to impersonate her and demand money from you for a fake emergency,” Google said.
Global rollout of the feature starts in June 2026. Users of Android 12 on Pixel devices will be first in line to receive it. Google has already launched verified financial calls to warn when a scammer is impersonating a user’s bank.
Fake call detection adds protection for personal contacts. The feature acts as a digital handshake between devices using Phone by Google. When one of the user’s contacts calls using Phone by Google, their phone will send a real-time end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services silent confirmation.
The silent confirmation verifies the legitimacy of the communication and confirms the call is coming from the caller’s device rather than a spoofed caller ID using AI deepfake voice. If the call is missing the confirmation signal, the user’s phone will instantly notice and ping the contact’s actual device to double-check.
If the contacted person is not calling, the user will see an on-screen warning advising them to hang up immediately.
