Google demonstrated prototype Android XR glasses at its I/O developer conference this week. The glasses overlay Gemini-powered information such as weather, walking directions, Uber pickup details, and live translation directly in the user's field of view.

The prototypes were developed in partnership with Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, and Samsung. They pair with both iOS and Android phones and represent the next step after audio-only glasses scheduled to ship later this year.

The tested units were described as polished prototypes focused on display technology and battery life rather than final cosmetic details. A two-second press on the right side of the frame activates Gemini, which can play music, capture photos, or provide navigation instructions.

In one test, Gemini translated spoken Spanish into English text displayed on the lens while speaking the translation through audio. In another, the glasses showed turn-by-turn directions from Google Maps, with the option to view a map by looking down.

The prototype displayed information over the right eye only. Users reported some eye strain during testing, though the cause was not confirmed. The shipping version is expected to support single or dual displays and allow users to configure camera activation when Gemini starts.

Google first announced the Android XR glasses at last year's I/O conference. The audio-only version is scheduled to begin shipping this fall, while the display version remains in prototype testing. The company noted that the final product will detect when the glasses are placed on or removed from the head, a feature not present in the tested prototypes.
