Google announced the largest redesign of its search box since the service launched in 1998. The update turns the box into an interface for asking complex questions and receiving AI-generated responses that can include follow-up questions and actions such as creating event invitations.

The company said the changes integrate its existing AI mode and AI overviews into a single system. It also added the ability to generate charts and use coding tools to produce richer answers for technical queries.

Google reported that search queries reached a record high last month. Some websites have said visits declined after earlier AI features kept users inside Google products rather than directing them to external pages. The company previously faced criticism when its AI overviews displayed inaccurate information, including one instance that suggested using glue on pizza.

Google said it will release intelligent eyewear later this year in partnership with glasses companies including Warby Parker. The product will allow wearers to look at objects and receive spoken information about them. The announcement follows Google Glass, which the company discontinued in 2015 after the product received widespread criticism.

Other companies have since introduced similar devices.
