Google presented updates to its search product at its I/O developer conference this week. The company introduced a system where users interact directly with its Gemini AI model instead of receiving a list of web links. Head of search Liz Reid said the change represents the most significant update to the search box in the company's history.

Users can now enter conversational prompts that generate customized responses, sometimes including charts, bullet points, and interactive elements.

The new system builds on AI Overview, which Google introduced two years ago. AI Overview places summaries at the top of search results pages. Reid said the company now views search as AI search. " The company stated that overall search volume has reached record levels.

Reid said Google continues to scrape billions of web pages daily. The goal, she stated, is to gather facts for personalized AI responses. She added that some users still click through to original web links after viewing AI summaries. Search VP Robby Stein described how AI agents can create dynamic layouts and interactive widgets for specific queries.

Reid acknowledged that the technology is not perfect and can produce errors. Reid said Google still conducts search quality meetings, though they are now spread across multiple sessions. She stated that human judgment remains part of the process.
