9to5google.comGoogle and Volvo announced today at the I/O conference that the Gemini AI assistant will access external cameras in the upcoming Volvo EX60 SUV. The system will interpret surroundings and provide information to vehicle owners. The upgrade uses Volvo's existing Android Automotive operating system.
Google stated that the initial application will allow drivers to ask Gemini to translate parking signs and explain restrictions such as time limits and permit requirements.
Google said Gemini could later interpret road signs, lane markings, and nearby landmarks. Patrick Brady, VP of Android Automotive at Google, stated that Gemini will allow drivers to learn more about their surroundings while on the road. The feature also uses the EX60's Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processor and over-the-air software updates.
Volvo will be among the first automakers to receive Google Maps' new Immersive Navigation feature, which renders routes in 3D and incorporates nearby landmarks for conversational directions. Testing will determine accuracy before the feature reaches production vehicles.
