Government proposes remote control of heat pumps during peak demand

Energy suppliers could gain the ability to lower heat pump output in participating homes during periods of high electricity use under a government consultation. The Smart Secure Electricity Systems scheme would permit licensed providers to adjust systems via internet connections when the grid faces strain.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero stated the measure aims to balance supply and reduce blackout risks.

Households that enroll would receive discounted energy tariffs. More than 223,000 heat pumps are installed in existing British properties. All units installed since April 2025 must include internet connectivity.

A DESNZ spokesman said reports of cybersecurity risks were scaremongering and that smart heat pumps already carry robust security protocols. Critics have pointed to risks during extreme weather when heating or cooling demand peaks. Energy specialists have urged the government to ensure homeowners can override remote instructions.
