Grants expand rooftop solar access for Australian apartment buildings
State and federal programs have funded solar installations for thousands of apartments in New South Wales and Victoria. Apartment uptake remains below 3 percent while detached homes exceed 35 percent.
Installations have occurred in both owner-occupied and rental units.
Installation numbers and technology One Melbourne-based supplier reported 3,182 new apartment connections in the past 12 months. Its system divides output from a single rooftop array among five to 60 individual apartments. A three-storey building in Sydney's Waverton suburb installed a 26-kilowatt system last October.
The owners received a $23,000 state grant toward $58,000 in total costs and reported a 38 percent drop in one resident's electricity use over six months.
