GB News# Updated Demand Flexibility Scheme Launches This Week The updated Demand Flexibility Scheme is launching this week in Great Britain. The scheme change was approved by Ofgem last month. It will be operated by the National Energy System Operator.
The scheme is designed to stabilise the electricity grid during the summer months. The National Energy System Operator will notify suppliers of specific periods when adjustments to electricity usage are required. Energy companies will receive payments if they successfully shift customer demand during specified windows.
Suppliers can pass on incentives to households in forms such as free electricity during certain hours, reduced tariffs, or points exchangeable for vouchers. Participation in the scheme requires a smart meter. Customers must be with a supplier that has signed up to the scheme.
Incentives available may vary depending on location. British Gas, Equiwatt, and Octopus Energy have confirmed they will take part in the scheme. British Gas operates a separate initiative called PeakSave, offering electricity at half price on Sunday afternoons.
Renewable Energy Reaches Record Levels in 2025 Renewable energy generation reached record levels in Great Britain in 2025.
Wind power was the largest source of renewable energy in Great Britain in 2025. Solar generation increased by nearly one third compared with 2024. 2025 was recorded as the sunniest year on record in the UK.
There were around 250,000 new small-scale rooftop solar installations added in 2025. On roughly a third of days in 2025, at least half of Britain's electricity came from renewables, according to BBC analysis of NESO data. Growth in localised generation is reducing reliance on traditional power stations, according to the National Energy System Operator.
National Energy System Operator on System Challenges The National Energy System Operator stated: "The complexity of operating the system at low demand is increasing, and we may need to use more of our tools, and use them more often, than in previous summers.
" The Demand Flexibility Scheme addresses these challenges by enabling demand shifts during peak periods. Suppliers participating in the scheme, such as British Gas, Equiwatt, and Octopus Energy, will facilitate customer adjustments notified by the National Energy System Operator.
