A great white shark was videotaped feeding on the carcass of a humpback whale in waters off Rhode Island, according to @CBSNews reported. The footage captured the roughly 8-foot shark consuming the remains of the 40-foot whale while it floated miles from Block Island. Jon Dodd, executive director of the Atlantic Shark Institute, recorded the underwater scene.
He and Sarah Callan, animal rescue manager at Connecticut's Mystic Aquarium, had searched nearly 50 square miles of ocean for several hours before locating the floating carcass. @CBSNews reported that the shark appeared healthy and well fed, with the whale to itself during the visit.
The carcass eventually washed ashore on Block Island's Crescent Beach, where it was found days later covered with countless shark bites.
At least one other great white shark was seen feeding on a whale carcass off the coast of Block Island in recent weeks, @CBSNews reported, citing WPRI. It remained unclear whether the same whale had drawn multiple sharks as it drifted.
