Greece began paying fishermen 5.33 euros per kilogram for silver-cheeked toadfish catches on Friday, June 26, @DailyCaller reported. The government will freeze and incinerate every fish turned in under the program. Agriculture Minister Margaritis Schinas stated that the payouts mark the first time Greece has taken such a measure.
The silver-cheeked toadfish first appeared in Greek waters around 2005 after entering the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal from the Indo-Pacific. Fishermen off Crete and other islands have reported repeated net damage from the species. Giorgos Kyriakakis of a Cretan fishermen’s association said outings now often require three days of repairs afterward.
Alexis Charalampakis told AFP that a bite can remove a finger. Cyprus has paid for the same species since June 2024 and collected nearly 103 tons through the program, @DailyCaller reported. An elderly woman needed stitches after a bite near Athens, and an eight-year-old girl lost a finger in southern Turkey.
The fish contains tetrodotoxin, a neurotoxin that can cause heart failure if eaten. Sixteen medical and tourism groups on Crete stated there is no imminent danger to bathers and that the fish have not appeared in resort swimming areas.
