Greek authorities plan to extend Navagio Beach on Zakynthos by 30 metres toward the sea using gravel, Euronews reported. The project aims to move the shipwreck farther from the water and reduce erosion damage to its metal hull. The beach remains closed to boats and swimmers for the 2026 summer season.
Authorities banned access until 31 October 2026 after inspections by the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation identified risks of extensive landslides. Navagio Beach has faced repeated closures. A cliff collapse in 2018 injured seven people.
A magnitude 5.4 earthquake in 2022 forced another temporary shutdown. Visitors may view the beach from above but face penalties for climbing down. Greek authorities re-evaluate safety conditions twice a year to decide on access.
The ship ran aground in October 1980 and now sits 25 metres from the sea. Authorities will place 45,000 cubic metres of gravel during the extension. Restoration work on the shipwreck will begin once the beach extension is finished.
