Le Monde reported that a March 2026 Frontex Fundamental Rights Office document describes events near the island of Samos in May 2025. A rubber dinghy carrying 43 people, including more than a dozen children, lost engine power in the Aegean Sea. " Instead of a rescue, the group was taken aboard a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel, Le Monde reported.
Officers transported the migrants at sea for two hours. Some officers carried weapons and wore black balaclavas. The officers confiscated the migrants' belongings and then threw them from a height of several meters into two inflatable life rafts.
Le Monde also reported a separate February 21, 2026, transfer of migrants from a Frontex vessel to a smaller boat off the coast of Crete. The March 2026 document forms part of the Fundamental Rights Office's record of incidents involving the Hellenic Coast Guard.
