Guernsey vets report two viral diseases in rabbits
Animal welfare staff in Guernsey report increased cases of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Viral Disease and urge owners to vaccinate pets. Officials also highlight ongoing risks from Myxomatosis.
bbc.co.ukAnimal experts in Guernsey are warning rabbit owners about two diseases that pose risks to unvaccinated animals, especially those kept outside. It also issued warnings about Myxomatosis.
A GSPCA manager said Myxomatosis spreads between rabbits through blood-sucking insects such as fleas, ticks, mites and mosquitoes. The same manager stated that the organization had increased isolation and quarantine measures for every rabbit entering its care.
The manager noted that RHVD2 had killed three rabbits at the shelter since summer 2017, with some animals appearing healthy in the morning before requiring emergency veterinary treatment later the same day. The disease can affect rabbits of any age and is believed to spread through fleas and other parasites.
Owners are advised to contact a veterinarian immediately if a rabbit shows signs of illness. Recommended steps include regular vaccinations against both diseases, removal of stagnant water that attracts insects, and use of mosquito-proof guards on hutches.
Symptoms listed for RHVD2 include loss of appetite, bleeding under the skin, clotting disorders, weight loss, jaundice and bleeding from body openings. Myxomatosis symptoms include swelling, redness, ulcers, nasal and eye discharge, blindness, respiratory problems, loss of appetite and lethargy.
