Kent Carpenter, 73, was shot dead during a robbery at his home in Sibulan on July 12. His companion was injured and police have not identified a motive.
uctoday.comGunmen killed American marine biologist Kent Carpenter, 73, during a home invasion at his residence in Sibulan, Negros Oriental province, on the night of July 12. Three unidentified men with covered faces forced entry, shot Carpenter in the head, and fled with a laptop, cash, and a backpack, according to the Philippine National Police.
His 34-year-old Filipina companion was wounded in the attack and is receiving medical treatment.
Investigators have not established a motive as of July 14. The U.S. Embassy in Manila was notified of the death. Regional police director Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño said the case is being treated with utmost urgency.
“I have directed our investigators to exhaust all legal means to identify and apprehend those responsible at the soonest possible time,” Cardiño stated. Carpenter had lectured and conducted marine research at Silliman University since 1976. He served as an expert witness for the Philippines in the 2016 South China Sea arbitration, submitting records on environmental damage from reclamation and destructive fishing.
He also studied the Verde Island Passage and backed its nomination as a World Heritage Site. In a 2024 video Carpenter said he had been studying the Philippine marine environment since 1975. Silliman University highlighted his work in ichthyology, marine biodiversity, systematics, conservation biology, and evolutionary research.
The Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines Diliman said Carpenter provided fifty years of guidance and remains an enduring influence on marine scientists, fisherfolk organizations, and conservation groups. Father Edwin Gariguez, lead convenor of Protect VIP, said environmental advocates reaffirm their commitment to protecting the Verde Island Passage after Carpenter’s death.
Several Philippine environmental and biodiversity centers have issued statements mourning the loss.
