Lewis Hamilton starts third on the grid for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix after qualifying behind Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen. Hamilton said he hopes to apply pressure at the start and that rain would improve his chances of a first victory with Ferrari.

Antonelli recorded what he called a "magic lap" to secure pole position. Verstappen qualified second, one place ahead of Hamilton. George Russell starts sixth and trails Antonelli by 43 points in the drivers' championship.

Hamilton noted the difficulty of overtaking at Monaco and said the car and brakes overheat on the narrow track. He added that he felt capable in the car and was grateful for the pace shown in practice, despite a drop in performance during qualifying. Antonelli said the session was the most intense of the year and that he was happy to be on pole.
