Harris Calls New York City Mayor Mamdani to Discuss Party Future After His Candidates Win Three Races

Kamala Harris called New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani last Thursday to discuss the party's future and arrange a longer conversation, Axios reported. The call came two days after candidates backed by Mamdani won three congressional races in New York City and defeated two incumbents. Harris has also texted with Mamdani several times in recent months.

In April, Harris met Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Chicago during the Power Rising conference. She has reached out to pro-Palestinian activists over the past year, including leaders of the Uncommitted Movement.

Last week in Detroit, Harris met Abbas Alawieh, a co-founder of the Uncommitted Movement who is now running for a Michigan state Senate seat. Alawieh said Harris requested the meeting after months of private conversations she started. -supported Israeli air strikes.

Harris also spoke recently with James Zogby, a Democratic National Committee member who has advocated for Palestinian rights. Harris has contacted former aides to discuss China, artificial intelligence, Venezuela and other topics. In her 2025 book 107 Days, she wrote that she privately urged former President Biden to show more empathy for civilians killed in Gaza and that his statements on the issue often appeared inadequate.

Rania Batrice, a progressive strategist, questioned whether Harris could regain trust among Arab American and left-wing voters. Patrick Gaspard said Harris had expressed concerns inside the Biden administration about insufficient empathy for Palestinians and continues to seek views outside Washington. Harris remains near the top of early 2028 Democratic presidential primary polls, Axios reported.

Zogby and spokespeople for Harris and Mamdani declined to comment.
