Harris Says DNC Should Release 2024 Campaign Review
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has told allies she believes the Democratic National Committee should publicly release its review of the 2024 presidential campaign. DNC Chairman Ken Martin has kept the findings private after previously promising to make them public.
Nbc NewsFormer Vice President Kamala Harris has told allies that she thinks an autopsy of the Democratic National Committee's 2024 election performance should be released publicly, according to conversations first reported by NBC News. Harris is not demanding the release.
The review was commissioned by DNC Chairman Ken Martin, who had promised to make the findings public but has since decided to keep them under wraps. Some Democrats have criticized the decision to withhold the document. There has been speculation that the review is being suppressed to protect Harris, though the source of that protection remains unclear.
By this point the major decisions of the 2024 campaign have been widely discussed. Harris has written a book about her campaign, as have others involved. Her performance at the Democratic convention and in the debate against President Donald Trump was public.
The review would likely focus on decisions made by political professionals on the campaign, at the DNC, in the Biden White House and at the main super PAC supporting Democrats. Critics have suggested the review would show that Harris's support for Israel hurt her among voters in key states.
That effect has already been examined in public reporting. It is not clear that voters who withheld support or backed Trump have improved their position on that issue. Harris has sought to avoid taking repeated criticism from Democratic activists who want the review released.
At the same time she has avoided directly confronting the DNC as she weighs a possible 2028 presidential bid. She has made her position known without making a public issue of it.
Legislature passed a new congressional map that splits the state's lone majority-Black district. The move came in response to last week's Supreme Court ruling that limited Voting Rights Act protections against racial gerrymandering. The redrawn map positions Republicans to gain a seat in this fall's midterm elections and achieve full control of the state's congressional delegation.
It divides the Memphis-based district into three new districts, spreading Democratic voters into larger rural Republican areas. The map also splits the Nashville metropolitan area, the state's other Democratic stronghold, into five districts. The governor called lawmakers into a special session this week to address the map ahead of the state's Aug.
6 primaries. Tennessee becomes the ninth state to enact a new congressional map before the midterms. The round of mid-decade redistricting began last year after President Donald Trump encouraged Republican-led states to redraw lines to strengthen the party's narrow House majority.
Republicans could gain as many as 14 seats from the changes nationwide, compared with up to 10 for Democrats. Several of the new maps still face court challenges. Louisiana and Alabama Republicans are preparing to redraw their maps while South Carolina lawmakers are debating similar changes.
The three states currently have five majority-minority districts held by Democrats.
