Harris says she is not surprised by reported federal probe of Newsom

Former Vice President Kamala Harris said Tuesday she is not surprised by reports of a federal investigation into California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife. She spoke to a CNN reporter while attending the Austrian World Summit. Harris described the current presidential administration as the most callous, corrupt, and incompetent in American history.

She added that she had predicted the events now unfolding.

Background on the reported probe Newsom stated Monday that the Department of Justice is investigating him, his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and current and former staff members. The inquiries reportedly involve public corruption and tax issues dating back at least one year.

Newsom has characterized the investigations as political retaliation tied to his possible 2028 presidential candidacy. He said the actions target him because he has criticized the president. A source told The California Post that Newsom's public statement may have been intended to undermine the credibility of any ongoing inquiries.

The Department of Justice has declined to comment. One investigation linked to the Newsom administration resulted in the former chief of staff pleading guilty to federal fraud and tax charges earlier this year. That case began under the prior administration.

U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff said the president's use of the Justice Department continues with new targets each day. He stated that Newsom and Senate colleagues will remain defiant in the face of the investigations.
