Harvard Study Finds GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs Linked to Higher Marriage Rates but No Rise in Women's Life Satisfaction

Rebecca Diamond, professor of economics at Harvard University, published research showing associations between GLP-1 weight-loss medications and changes in women's social and economic outcomes, Fox News reported. The study drew on panel data from the Understanding America Study conducted by the University of Southern California.

Diamond compared women who started GLP-1 medications for weight loss with women who wanted to begin treatment but had not yet done so.

The analysis focused exclusively on women and excluded individuals taking the drugs for diabetes. Researchers accounted for differences in body mass, health, income, employment, partnership status and well-being before treatment. Marriage and cohabitation rose 29 percent among single women roughly 18 months after they began the medications.

Among women who were not employed at the start of the study, job prospects increased 27 percent over the same period. Women who were already employed showed no clear upward career progress after treatment. Diamond argued that the results point to effects during new matching situations rather than within existing jobs or relationships.

Dr. Peter Balazs, a hormone and weight-loss specialist practicing in New York and New Jersey, commented that the effects appeared in new-match contexts such as job interviews or dating. Balazs said patients commonly report feeling more confident and visible after weight loss, which can translate into stronger interview performance and networking.

The study was observational rather than a randomized clinical trial. The paper has not yet been peer-reviewed, and the data relied on self-reported information from participants. Researchers could not determine whether women who found new jobs earned higher pay, and treated women did not report greater overall life satisfaction.
