Harvard Study Links GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs to Higher Marriage Rates but No Earnings or Well-Being Gains for Women

Rebecca Diamond, a professor of economics at Harvard University, published research that associated GLP-1 weight-loss medications with increased marriage and employment rates among women. The analysis used panel data from the Understanding America Study conducted by the University of Southern California and compared women who started the medications with those who wanted to begin treatment but had not yet done so.

The study focused only on women using the drugs for weight loss and excluded those taking them for diabetes.

Researchers adjusted for pre-treatment differences in body mass, health, income, employment, partnership status, and well-being. Marriage and cohabitation rose 29 percent among single women roughly 18 months after they began the medications. Job prospects increased 27 percent over the same period for women who were not employed at the start of the study.

Women who were already employed showed no clear upward career progress after treatment. Diamond stated that the results point to effects during new matching situations rather than within existing jobs or relationships. Dr.

Peter Balazs, a hormone and weight-loss specialist practicing in New York and New Jersey, said the effects appeared in new-match contexts such as job interviews or dating. He noted that patients commonly report feeling more confident and visible after weight loss, which can translate into stronger interview performance and networking.

The study was observational rather than a randomized clinical trial.
