Health Canada approved Svemia, the first generic semaglutide injection for chronic weight management, on June 29, 2026. Cbc reported that the regulator cleared the product for once-weekly use in people age 12 and older when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Apotex, a Canadian company, filed the submission.
Svemia is a generic version of Wegovy, the brand-name drug sold by Denmark's Novo Nordisk. Cbc reported that the approval marks Health Canada's third generic semaglutide product. The first two approvals covered treatment of Type 2 diabetes in adults.
Those earlier decisions authorized generic versions of Ozempic from India-based Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and from Apotex. Health Canada is reviewing six additional generic semaglutide submissions from other companies.
Cbc reported that the agency expects to issue more decisions in the coming weeks and months. The federal regulator stated that greater availability of generic drugs is expected to produce cost savings for patients and the health-care system.
