A heat advisory has been issued for eastern Montana as temperatures are expected to reach as high as 102 degrees Tuesday. m. MDT. The National Weather Service in Glasgow said strong southeast winds gusting up to 40 mph are also forecast near Fort Peck Lake.

A separate lake wind advisory has been issued for that area.

Officials said the combination of heat, low humidity and wind will increase wildfire danger in grassland areas. Residents were advised to avoid outdoor burning and to use extra caution with any activity that could create sparks.

The advisory warned that car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes and urged people not to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. It also recommended staying hydrated, remaining in air-conditioned spaces when possible and checking on neighbors.

Forecasters said several cities, including Billings, could break daily temperature records on Tuesday. The National Weather Service stated that above-average temperatures are expected across Montana through at least June 7.
