Heat Wave Cancels Fourth of July Parades and Fireworks Across Eastern US

A dangerous heat wave disrupted Fourth of July celebrations across the central and eastern United States on Friday, July 3, 2026, forcing officials to cancel or postpone dozens of parades, concerts and fireworks displays. Several cities set record temperature highs during the heat wave. In Philadelphia, temperatures hit 103°F on Thursday, July 2, tying a record last seen in 1901, prompting officials to cancel the Salute to Independence Parade. Haddon Township, New Jersey, cancelled its annual July 4 parade, while Watertown, New York, called off its Independence Day concert and fireworks display.

Boston officials delayed entry to an annual riverside fireworks celebration by four hours to 4pm on July 4 instead of noon. In New York City, shoe soles stuck to Manhattan streets as adhesives softened in the heat, yet fans gathered on sidewalks outside Madison Square Garden to watch celebrity guests arrive for the expected wedding celebration of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
