Heat Wave Grips South Korea as Temperatures Reach 39.9 C

A heat wave swept across South Korea on July 11 with temperatures reaching 39.9 C in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, yna.co.kr reported. The reading occurred at 2:23 p.m. before falling to 38.3 C by 2:55 p.m.

m. included 38.2 C in Daegu, 37.5 C in Gyeongju and 36.8 C in Yangsan. Other cities recorded 34.4 C in Daejeon, 34.3 C in Gwangju, 33 C in Busan and 32.4 C in Seoul. The Korea Meteorological Administration said the heat wave is expected to continue and that high humidity would push apparent temperatures to 33 C in most areas and above 35 C in the capital, Chungcheong and southern regions.

Heat wave alerts covered 209 of 235 land weather advisory zones, with advisories active in 130 zones and warnings in 79 zones. Tropical night advisories were issued for Nonsan, Jeongeup and Gyeongsan. A photograph showed pedestrians walking along a road with heat haze rising from the pavement in Daegu.
