Heatwave sets new June temperature records across western Europe

Last week’s heatwave produced record June maximum temperatures in several European countries. Provisional readings included 37.7C in the UK and 41.7C in Germany. Officials issued heat and fire warnings as conditions persisted. The UK recorded a provisional high of 37.7C at Lingwood, Norfolk, on Friday 27 June.
That figure exceeded the previous June record of 35.6C set in 1976 by 2.1 degrees. Germany recorded 41.7C on 28 June in Coschen, surpassing the previous all-time record.
Additional national records The Netherlands recorded 39.4C on 26 June, breaking its June record. Hungary recorded 42C in Szécsény on 30 June, setting a new all-time national high. Several countries also reported tropical nights with minimum temperatures above 20C.
The highest minimum temperature reached 29.4C in East Saxony, Germany. France recorded multiple days above 40C, prompting nuclear power plants to shut down. High humidity accompanied the elevated nighttime readings.
Conditions in north-western China North-western China recorded maxima near 45C on Monday and 47C on Tuesday. Authorities expect temperatures to remain above 45C through 7 July in the Yuli and Ruoqiang regions. Officials have advised residents to limit outdoor work and protect vulnerable people.
Road surface temperatures may exceed 60C, raising risks of asphalt deformation and vehicle breakdowns. Speed restrictions have been placed on railways due to high track temperatures. A persistent high-pressure system is sustaining the dry, hot conditions.
