Hertz to List 8,000 Used Rental Cars for Sale on eBay

Hertz is partnering with eBay to sell thousands of used cars from its rental fleet online. The company announced on May 5 that its deal with eBay would result in 8,000 used car listings being available on the website. Chris Berg, Hertz's executive vice president of global fleet management, said the deal with eBay is a "natural next step" as Hertz continues to build its used car business and digital presence.

"It gives us access to millions of in-market shoppers on a trusted platform, supports a scalable retail model, reduces our reliance on wholesale channels, and puts our near-new certified inventory in front of more customers than ever before," Berg said.

Wielgoss said that with Hertz bringing its inventory to eBay, the platform is connecting shoppers with a world-class selection of near-new certified vehicles backed by eBay’s Secure Purchase for a seamless buying experience. The announcement comes as car buyers face rising prices for both new and used vehicles.

The average price of a used car was $25,500 in April 2026. That figure was up roughly $1,500 from March 2026, according to Carfax. The average price of a new car was $49,275 in March 2026. 5% from March 2025.

Consumer Reports said buyers should not automatically rule out former rentals when shopping for used cars. Michael Crossen, lead technician at Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center, said used rental cars can be priced very competitively with a wide selection of available models under $20,000.

Crossen added that if buying a used rental car, buyers should buy from one of the biggest companies for extra protection and the widest selection of models.

Some used cars that are former rentals may be young enough to still be covered by their original factory warranty. Major rental companies like Hertz, Enterprise and Avis typically offer a 12-month/12,000-mile limited warranty from the time of purchase. Most rental companies offer competitive pricing on used cars because they are eager to turn over their rental fleets.

Most rental companies will allow return of a used car within a week of purchase if the buyer changes their mind. Enterprise will buy back a used car from a buyer if they change their mind in the first week or 1,000 miles after purchase. Hertz will rent the car for three days at a special rate for an extended test drive.

Some rental companies will accept trade-ins when shoppers purchase used cars from them. Some rental companies have their own financing companies or work with multiple lenders to provide financing options.
