Highway 1 Reopens Through Fraser Canyon but Two Wildfires Remain Out of Control

Highway 1 through British Columbia's Fraser Canyon reopened on Saturday, July 11, 2026, after closing on July 7, Cbc reported. The route had been shut as the Brunswick wildfire complex near Boston Bar grew rapidly. As of Saturday morning the Brunswick Creek wildfire on the west side of the canyon measured 28.36 square kilometres and the Ainslie Creek wildfire on the east side measured 158.47 square kilometres.

Both fires remained out of control, and multiple evacuation orders and alerts stayed in effect. DriveBC stated that one lane operated in each direction with a 60 km/h speed limit and no stopping permitted in the wildfire zone. Drivers were told to watch for signage and crews.

The B.C. Wildfire Service used cooler temperatures and lower winds on Friday to strengthen defenses around homes and infrastructure. Those conditions were forecast to continue through the weekend before wind and heat return Monday and Tuesday.

The fires in the Brunswick complex are suspected to have been human-caused. As of Saturday, 18 active wildfires burned across British Columbia, four of them classified as out of control.
