Wildlife observers in Ladakh report that Himalayan wolves are breeding with feral dogs and producing a hybrid locally known as khipshang. The animals are described as larger than dogs but smaller than wolves, with tawny coats and reduced fear of humans.

Tsewang Namgail, director of the Snow Leopard Conservancy India Trust, said the hybrids have been noticed in the past five to ten years. He estimates there are currently about 80 hybrids across the nearly 60,000 square kilometres of India-administered Ladakh.

The hybrids are reported to lead packs of dogs and to enter villages to kill livestock. Namgail stated that the animals combine the fearlessness of dogs with the killing instinct of wolves. Mohammad Imran, a Ladakhi film-maker and naturalist, said the hybrids do not fear humans.

Dog bite cases at the hospital in Leh are reported at four to five per day, with at least four local deaths attributed to dogs this year.

Ladakh has an estimated 25,000 feral dogs compared with a few hundred Himalayan wolves. Namgail said the hybrids could dilute the wolf population and outcompete other carnivores in the region. Carter Niemeyer, a trapper involved in earlier wolf reintroductions in the United States, said wolf-dogs should not be allowed to procreate and run wild.

No formal scientific study of the hybrids has been conducted, and information remains limited to anecdotal observations.
