The position was first established in 1789 when President George Washington appointed Edmund Randolph, a Founding Father and former Virginia governor. Since then, dozens of individuals have served, with some departures drawing significant attention due to political scandals or conflicts.
The Watergate scandal during President Richard Nixon's administration led to several key resignations in 1973.
the Saturday Night Massacre Nixon accepted Kleindienst's resignation, and key presidential aides also departed around this time. Eliot Richardson, then secretary of defense, succeeded Kleindienst. On October 20, 1973, Nixon ordered Richardson to fire Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox after Cox subpoenaed Oval Office recordings.
Richardson, who had appointed Cox and pledged not to remove him without cause, refused and resigned. Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus also resigned rather than comply with the order. Solicitor General Robert Bork then carried out the firing.
Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974.

Bush, Alberto Gonzales served as attorney general from 2005 until his resignation on September 17, 2007. Gonzales, Bush's adviser since his time as Texas governor, was the first Hispanic attorney general.
