Fletcher joined an expansion franchise as general manager in 1972 and stayed with the organization after its relocation in 1980. The team reached the league final in 1986 and won the championship three years later.
He completed a 10-player trade in 1992 and acquired additional personnel, including a coach from a rival organization. The team advanced to consecutive conference finals in 1993 and 1994. Fletcher also acquired a player from the Quebec Nordiques in 1994 who later became the franchise scoring leader.
He held positions with two additional organizations before his election to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
